In Seattle, the law (SMC 11.72.110) says you can’t park in front of or within 5 feet of a driveway or alley entrance. It’s supposed to keep driveways clear so you can come and go as you please.

But in Ballard, this has always been a issue. Cars block driveways constantly—sometimes for “just a minute,” sometimes all night. I’ve seen neighbors pacing outside their homes, unable to get their own cars out. It’s more than just an inconvenience—it’s annoying, stressful, and downright frustrating when you can’t use your own driveway because someone else decided their time was more important than yours. And while the city might ticket or tow, that doesn’t solve the problem in the moment. Especially when you have to deal with it.

After dealing with this issue personally, I learned there’s actually a simple step you as a property owner can take to prevent cars from parking in your driveway. Seattle law (SMC 11.72.120) allows homeowners and tenants to paint the curb around their driveway with traffic yellow paint.

This isn’t just about paint—it’s about sending a clear message:
